I thought I would start a new week log to showcase the best beer I had in the previous week. My only self-imposed rule will be that I will only award to a beer that has not previously been a “Best Beer of the Week”. The idea will be to highlight a different beer each week.
For this initial week, the winner is an easy one: Utopias Barrel-Aged World Wide Stout (2020). I have heard about the 28% ABV “Utopias” from Sam Adams for a few years now, but have never had the opportunity to sample (it is also very expensive). However, this beauty which brings together that unicorn with the famous “World Wide Stout” from Dogfish Head was made possible by the joining together of these two breweries.
The experience of drinking Utopias is often described as ritualistic. Rare and often rumored about in the darkest corners of the beer community, this variety of World Wide Stout is dark, rich, roasty, and complex.
While I have not had the pure Utopias from Sam Adams nor the non-utopias version of the Dogfish Head Barrel-Aged World Wide Stout, to be able to compare with, I can say this 17.3 % ABV beauty was very rich, intense and wonderful. Looking forward to trying the “parents” of this baby hopefully one day soon!
